Suwon Hwaseong Fortress was built in September 1796 by King Jeongjo, the 22nd ruler of the Joseon Dynasty, after moving the tomb of his father Crown Prince Jangheon (also known as Crown Prince Sado) to Hwasan Mountain. It was designated as a World Cultural Heritage by UNESCO in 1997, and has become a global tourist destination by being chosen as one of the "best tourist destinations in Korea" and "50 beautiful places to visit in Korea chosen by CNN."
It is a temporary palace where the Joseon Kings used to stay when they visited the city to pay their respect to the tombs of their predecessors. King Jeongjo visited his father's tomb 12 times for 11 years between February 1790 and January 1800. During every visit, King Jeongjo stayed at this temporary palace and hosted various banquets here. Hwaseong Haenggung Palace is the biggest of its kind with 567 rooms and was designated as the national historic site No. 478.
