Currency

  • The official currency of South Korea is the Korean won (KRW). While major credit cards and US dollars are widely accepted at most tourist destinations, having local currency on hand is recommended.
  • Korean won is available in both coins and bills. Coins are denominated in ₩10, ₩50, ₩100, and ₩500, while bills are available in ₩1,000, ₩5,000, ₩10,000, and ₩50,000 denominations. For your convenience, banks, ATMs, and currency exchange services are readily available.

Tip & VAT

  • Tipping is not customary in Korea. Additionally, the standard Value Added Tax (VAT) rate of 10% is typically included in the total bill.

Business Hours

  • Banks are open from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm on weekdays and closed on Saturday and Sunday.
  • Government office hours are usually from 9:00 am to 06:00 pm on weekdays and closed on weekends.

Weather

  • The Republic of Korea experiences four distinct seasons. Suwon, a historic city located just south of Seoul, generally enjoys a mild and pleasant spring climate. Extreme weather is rare during this season. In late April, you can typically expect average temperatures to range between 11°C and 21°C (52°F–70°F).

Electricity

  • The standard voltage used in Korea is 220V. A power plug adapter is required if you use different plugs and sockets in your country of residence. Participants are advised to check with the hotel in advance, as most hotels can offer outlet converters for 110V and 220V.
